HP bundles a number of utilities with the dm1z, including its Power Manager and Thermal Assistant. The machine also has HP's MediaSmart 4.0 software, which acts as a portal for multimedia both on the notebook and from services such as Hulu and Netflix. Other software includes Blio e-Reader, Microsoft Office 2010 Starter, and a 60-day trial of Symantec Norton Internet Security 2011. Doing so may be tricky, as the bottom is all one piece, and cannot be removed easily. Our dm1z came with 3GB of RAM, but users can install up to 8GB. The dm1z starts at $449 for that, you get a 250GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM. The dm1z comes with Bluetooth, and can be configured with mobile broadband. At 50 feet, however, throughput dropped to an average of 15.1 Mbps, which is about 3Mbps slower than the category average. The Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi card in the dm1z performed fairly well at 15 feet from our router, we saw throughput of 35.3 Mbps, which is about 9 Mbps faster than the netbook average. So at least on this laptop, AMD Fusion provides an endurance boost of at least 1.5 hours, which is impressive. That's about an hour longer than the 1215N and ultraportable laptop average. The dm1z lasted 6 hours and 37 minutes on the LAPTOP Battery Test (web surfing via Wi-Fi). One area where AMD-powered notebooks have traditionally suffered compared to their Intel counterparts is endurance. Content such as the Tron: Legacy trailer was smooth and crisp, and audio was perfectly in sync with video. When we output full HD videos to the TV, we measured frame rates of 60 fps. We then connected the dm1z to a 32-inch 1080p TV using HDMI. By comparison, the 1215N managed 28 fps using the recommended settings. Maxing everything out dropped the game to 13 fps. At the recommended settings (good, in the dm1z's case), the system managed 24 frames per second as we flew our character around. That same slight margin of difference held when we fired up World of Warcraft. Still, the EeePC beat the dm1z, scoring 2,692 on the same test. It even creams the ultraportable average of 1,367. The dm1z returned a score of 2,217 in 3DMark06, which is about 1,000 points above the ThinkPad X100e (1,080), the Dell M101z (1,309), and the Toshiba T215D (1,162). Like the CPU, the integrated AMD Radeon HD 6310 GPU provided performance between Intel's integrated and Nvidia's Ion graphics. That's even slower than the netbook average (18.9 MBps). That's twice as fast as the Dell Inspiron Duo (14:44), and much better than the 1215N (12:08) and the Aspire 1410 (11:31). Despite having a 7,200-rpm, 320GB hard drive, the dm1z was slow to duplicate a 5GB folder of multimedia it took 4 minutes and 36 seconds, a rate of 18.4 MBps. The dm1z's time also falls between Atom-powered netbooks like the 1215N (3:17) and older AMD-powered machines such as the Dell M101z (2:16).Ĭonverting a five-minute 1080p video to an iPod touch format using MediaShow Espresso took 7 minutes and 21 seconds. That's more than twice as fast as the netbook average (5:56), but still a minute slower than the ultraportable average (1:58). The dm1z took 2 minutes and 45 seconds to transcode a five-minute, 114MB MPEG4 to AVI using Oxelon Media Encoder. However, synthetic benchmarks are one thing, and real-world tests are another. Even the Acer Aspire 1410, which has a 1.2-GHz Intel Celeron SU2300 CPU, fared better (2,475). However, the dm1z is 1,400 points below the ultraportable average, and comes up short compared to the Lenovo Thinkpad X100e (2,382), which has a dual-core AMD Turion processor, and the Dell Inspiron M101z (2,431), which has a 1.3-GHz AMD Athlon CPU. That's well above the netbook average (1,351), and beats out the 1215N (1,921) which has a 1.8-GHz Intel Atom D525, and the Toshiba Satellite T215D (1,938), which has a 1.7-GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K125 CPU. The dual-core 1.6-GHz AMD E-350 CPU and 3GB of RAM powered the dm1z to a PCMark Vantage score of 2,198. It's definitely faster than dual-core Atom netbooks, but certainly not as speedy as more premium ultraportables. The Pavilion dm1z uses AMD's new Fusion APU, which combines the GPU and the CPU on one chip. In these cases, consumers often engage in the sunk cost fallacy, which is undeniably one of the most costly cognitive biases. However, consumers can also experience sunk costs of their own when they spend money on something and can’t recuperate their funds in the event they change their mind. Spending money on training new employees only to end up firing them.Spending money on research and development and then canceling the project partway through.Spending money on marketing for your small business that you later shut down. There are plenty of examples of sunk costs, mostly relating to business decisions. In other words, a sunk cost occurs when you spend money on something without any chance of recovering that money, even if you desperately want to. In economics, a sunk cost refers to a cost that has already occurred and that you can’t recuperate. If you want to protect yourself against this harmful line of thinking, you need to understand what the sunk cost fallacy is and how you can recognize it before it leads you to make bad decisions. Whatever the case, it’s clear that our minds have a massive influence on how we handle money. However, if there’s one cognitive bias that can lead to complete financial ruin, it’s the sunk cost fallacy. For others, a shopping addiction could be an expensive coping mechanism. For some, overconfidence might lead to making risky, speculative investments. There are also plenty of examples of how thinking patterns can derail our financial decision-making. In fact, there are numerous cognitive biases that cost us money, and we’re sometimes our own worst enemy. Although it might surprise you, psychology plays a significant role in how you manage your finances. I'm guessing they are based on tunes from the film, but don't quote me on that. The same cutesy tunes looping on the infinite Midi chip of doom. At least the infinite continues make it slightly less frustrating. Needless to say watching Aladdin, plunge to his death for the zillionth time is just as much fun as wetting your fingers and jamming them into the Master System cart slot. Too many platforms are placed just out of eye reach as well so many leaps of faith have to be attempted. Holes and steps are not made very clear, they sort of merge into the background detail. The backgrounds are VERY badly designed as well. Still Aladdin has a mighty arsenal of Apples with which to fend off these demonic hordes. Luckily these things mostly stay in one place on preprogrammed paths, expept the rocks which just fall on you head out of nowhere, you for fun. Like your usual platform game hero he is woefully vulnerable to all kinds of horrors like, teeny, weeny bats, small rocks and water. He can't be steered mid-air and gauging the lengths of his jumps becomes very tricky. Curse you Disney for making me think this might be more than just a run-of-the-mill platform game, you suckered me good and proper! Chiz, chiz…etcĪt this point the rotten controls also make themselves painfully known. Yes, to progress Aladdin must leap across gaps, climb onto platforms and dodge enemies in a tedious fashion. Once Aladdin reaches the cave, the game reveals its true colours. So far we have had a couple of fun chase levels and an interminable amount of talking. Then they are captured and Jafar tells her he has executed Aladdin, who has actually escaped with a wizened old bloke who sends him into the cave full of treasure where the genie in the lamp lurks. He then meets the princess and they run across some rooftops in the same manner. Aladdin steals some bread and is chased by Palace guards, Aladdin runs across the screen and you can't control his speed, you can only time his jumps over obstacles like barrels and holes. The first couple of levels are actually reasonably good fun. The most annoying thing about this game is it tries to fool you in to thinking its NOT just another crappy licensed platform game, which so many films become when converted to games. While it maybe seen as a commendable attempt to give a fairly basic game some depth it actually comes across as tedious padding. Sometimes there is so much it takes several minutes to read though it all. This isn't actually a good thing, as you have to scroll through loads of badly written, patronising dialogue. There are also acres of story interspersing the levels. Alas for me, no Widow Twankee cropped up, but that annoying blue genie based on Robin Williams did so I guess it's pretty authentic. I haven't actually seen the film Aladdin, but I have seen the Panto version many times. This is one of them.Īs a game its sticks pretty close to the plot of the film, I think. I had a pile of unplayed games, one wet Sunday afternoon I played though them. So having put my biased cards on the table early on you probably won't be surprised to see that I have given Disney's Aladdin on the Sega Master System such a low score.Īctually you'll probably be wondering why I actually started playing it seeing as I have such distaste for this type of game. In fact I could go as far as to say they are probably the genre of game I like the least. I like cack-handed, shoddy ''oh the kids will buy it'' licensed games based on Disney films even less. While I can appreciate the stunning technical achievements and superbly crafted storylines, the actual end products have never really appealed to me even as a youngster. So having put my biased cards on the table early on you probably won'." Disney's Aladdin (Sega Master System) review Likewise, others argue that the show became too preachy in later years, a drastic departure from the superior early days when it was just a cartoon about kids being kids - as if most normal childhoods involve volcanoes, big gay boat rides, and anal probes. For instance, just as many fans of The Simpsons all but dismiss later seasons, I’ve heard many South Park watchers claim that Parker and Stone had yet to find their true satirical stride until a few seasons in. Additionally, South Park has become an institution, and with that status comes hard stances. With a scope that broad, it’s impossible for the true gold, especially when we can’t agree on its carat, to cast the exact same glow across an entire audience. Since then, they’ve overturned every pop-cultural stone imaginable, searching for the foibles and peculiarities that make us a flawed and ridiculous, if usually well-meaning, species. Long ago, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone agreed that either everything or nothing in society is fair game to mock. I think the struggle stems, in part, from South Park’s very ethos. (Read: 20 Despicable Moves Donald Trump Totally Stole from Eric Cartman) You might argue that our ballots lacked uniformity due to the sheer volume of great episodes to choose from, but that doesn’t account for how a handful of episodes I’ll never spend 22 minutes plus commercials watching again made it on our initial lists. All of us have personal favorites, but critics, like us, are supposed to be able to wade past the mediocre and shine a light on the very best - and have that very best be the same very best. And the rest of our picks, to my eyes and personal taste, seemed like a random, arbitrary selection of forgotten favorites, meh choices, and even a couple complete head-scratchers. However, I think we all suspected that there’d be a lot of overlap. We figured, worst-case scenario, we’d chop the contenders down from 277 to 40, undeniable progress. The odd thing about breaking down South Park’s 20-year run that way is that others might agree wholeheartedly with those categories and rough percentages while talking about entirely different episodes - their favorites perhaps being near the bottom of my appreciation list and my go-tos, in their eyes, only fit for rewatching when channel surfing yields no waves.įor instance, the four authors of this piece, all longtime fans and writers on all things South Park, each submitted a top 10 list of episodes as a toe-dip into whittling down our options. It’s fair to say that within that vast volume, there are a couple dozen episodes I never wish to see again, a great deal more I’ll gladly kill a half-hour with should I stumble upon any of them, and at least that many, if not more, I’d consider classic satire from, let’s face it, a cartoon about four foulmouthed fourth graders. Prior to tonight’s season premiere, 277 episodes of South Park will have already aired. This time, we welcome you to come on down to South Park and meet some friends of ours. Top Episodes is a new feature in which we handpick the definitive best episodes of a groundbreaking, beloved, or otherwise awesome television series. The specific forms of planning proposed for socialism and their feasibility are subjects of the socialist calculation debate.įurther information: Government by algorithm The goal of such an economic system would be to achieve conscious control over the economy by the population, specifically so that the use of the surplus product is controlled by the producers. While socialism is not equivalent to economic planning or to the concept of a planned economy, an influential conception of socialism involves the replacement of capital markets with some form of economic planning in order to achieve ex-ante coordination of the economy. Some decentralized participation in economic planning occurred across Revolutionary Spain, most notably in Catalonia, during the Spanish Revolution of 1936. The Swedish government planned public-housing models in a similar fashion as urban planning in a project called Million Programme, implemented from 1965 to 1974. Īfter World War II (1939–1945) France and Great Britain practised dirigisme - government direction of the economy through non-coercive means. Nazi Germany's Four Year Plan of 1936 onwards involved elements of state planning in the Reich economy. 1928 intervened before the planned system of regular five-year plans started in 1928. However, the period of the New Economic Policy ( c. These policies began their formal consolidation under an official organ of government in 1921, when the Soviet government founded Gosplan. The Soviet-style planned economy in Soviet Russia evolved in the wake of a continuing existing World War I war-economy as well as other policies, known as war communism (1918–1921), shaped to the requirements of the Russian Civil War of 1917–1923. One view of mercantilism sees it as involving planned economies. Scholars have argued that the Incan economy was a flexible type of command economy, centered around the movement and utilization of labor instead of goods. In the Hellenistic and post-Hellenistic world, "compulsory state planning was the most characteristic trade condition for the Egyptian countryside, for Hellenistic India, and to a lesser degree the more barbaric regions of the Seleucid, the Pergamenian, the southern Arabian, and the Parthian empires". This highlights the central role of hierarchical administration and public ownership of production in guiding the allocation of resources in these economic systems. A command economy follows an administrative-command system and uses Soviet-type economic planning which was characteristic of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc before most of these countries converted to market economies. Market economies that use indicative planning are variously referred to as planned market economies, mixed economies and mixed market economies. Planned economies contrast with unplanned economies, specifically market economies, where autonomous firms operating in markets make decisions about production, distribution, pricing and investment. More recent approaches to socialist planning and allocation have come from some economists and computer scientists proposing planning mechanisms based on advances in computer science and information technology. Market abolitionist socialism replaces factor markets with direct calculation as the means to coordinate the activities of the various socially owned economic enterprises that make up the economy. Socialist states based on the Soviet model have used central planning, although a minority such as the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia have adopted some degree of market socialism. The level of centralization or decentralization in decision-making and participation depends on the specific type of planning mechanism employed. A planned economy may use centralized, decentralized, participatory or Soviet-type forms of economic planning. A planned economy is a type of economic system where the distribution of goods and services or the investment, production and the allocation of capital goods takes place according to economic plans that are either economy-wide or limited to a category of goods and services.
